Teaching
I'm particularly drawn to teaching topics that apply the more theoretical insights of philosophy to practical contemporary issues and questions. My approach to teaching draws on my background in the performing arts in using creative methods to inspire greater participation in the classroom and deeper engagement with the material. In the context of an Environmental Ethics course, this might look like assigning an imaginative exercise in which one designs a future environmentally friendly city, or asking students to try to have what they would consider a “nature experience” in a very urban place like Philadelphia, using these reflections to probe deep intuitions about what counts as nature. I find that these methods of engagement, when used alongside more traditional essays and presentations, can serve to make philosophy more relatable and relevant to students from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds.
